Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is the result of problems with the jaw, jaw joints, or related muscles.   TMD is often related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Dentists believe that TMD is caused by problems with jaw that may occur naturally or be related to injuries to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the jaw itself, or even the head or neck.   Additional causes may be from grinding teeeth, dislocation, osteoarthritis, or stress.
